The Benefits of Thalassotherapy: The Sea as a Source of Well-Being

By Dr. Michele Antonelli, MD - 01/03/2025

Thalassotherapy is a therapeutic practice that utilizes marine elements to promote physical and mental well-being. This approach, whose name derives from the Greek "thalassa" (sea) and "therapeia" (cure), is based on controlled exposure to the marine environment and its natural elements, such as seawater, coastal climate, sand, marine peloids, and algae.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Biometeorology, thalassotherapy offers several health benefits, particularly for skin and rheumatic diseases. The study analyzed 16 clinical researches, highlighting significant improvements in patients suffering from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and vitiligo, as well as in those affected by fibromyalgia and rheumatic conditions such as osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Seawater, rich in minerals, organic compounds, and a unique microbiota, has anti-inflammatory and draining effects. Moreover, the mild marine climate can enhance muscle relaxation and relieve joint pain (this effect can be amplified by the application of marine peloids, sand baths, or the combination of thalassotherapy with other physical therapies). Sun exposure also promotes vitamin D metabolism and helps reduce psoriatic manifestations. In addition to its physical benefits, thalassotherapy has been shown to improve psychological well-being and enhance patients' mood.

Although current studies on thalassotherapy show promising results (also supported by a long-standing tradition), further research is needed to quantify its long-term effects, ensure safe exposure, and better understand the biological mechanisms underlying its benefits.
